The navy ship named after former Southern Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords was christened Saturday in Mobile, Alabama. Vice President Joe Biden's wife Jill attended the ceremony for the U.S.S. Gabrielle Giffords.
"I'm thrilled to be here today," said Giffords. "Thank you for this honor. In Congress I was proud to support our armed forces. I love the Navy. I even married a sailor." Link
Perhaps I'm late to the party on this one, but the USS GG was apparently just christened yesterday.
I guess we've run out of Medal of Honor recipients, or other who are no longer with us....who have contributed mightily to our defense and our culture.
I saw a cartoon sailor on a box of Cracker-Jack in the grocery store 4 days ago. Does this mean I might be able to get a USN landing ship named after me?
ReplyDeleteProbably. There doesn't appear to be any standard for naming convention anymore, other than political pandering or a whim.
DeleteNot fans of Giffords, huh?
ReplyDeleteJMJ
Couldn't care less for her one way or another. Certainly not enough to name a ship after her.
DeleteShe didn't pay enough of a price for her country for you, huh?
DeleteJMJ
What did she do for her country?
DeleteShe did serve as an elected representative.
DeleteThat is a high and important calling according to our constitution.
However I am sure there are hundreds or thousands of other representatives or senators with much more distinguished careers than hers.
wtf
DeleteWhy can't we just do something nice for a nice person who represented her district and got shot in the f'n head for it and managed to survive? Does any of this cross your f'n minds?
JMJ
Be nice to her? Send her flowers. If naming a United States naval vessel uses such a low bar, why do we even bother? I've been blown up by IEDs....I think I should get a Littoral Combat Ship named after me.
DeleteIt's good to see that your in a froth about it though.
And that is the best point. There are thousands and thousands of servicemen and women wounded in the line of duty (or lost their lives) and/or decorated who would be at least good choices for names.
DeleteI'd be more in favor of honoring these individuals, pretty much nameless to the American public. than choosing names from the list of America's ruling elite.
I don't think naming something after Giffords is an outrage (for reasons I described) but there are far better choices.
I think you guys just hate Giffords but lack the spines to admit it.
DeleteJMJ
Since that fantasy is of your invention, please do tell why?
DeleteShe's barely a blip on the radar in pursuit ineffectual gun control. Why would any of us hate someone we don't know and not care about?
"I think you guys just hate Giffords but lack the spines to admit it."
Delete....a fantasy encouraged by "no evidence at all"
CI: "She's barely a blip on the radar in pursuit ineffectual gun control"
DeleteWell, that is a reason to dislike her: her actively working against the interest of the people and their safety, and for abusive government denying our rights. Referring to the gun issue only at this point.
Interesting, though, there is a story out a few hours ago about Giffords being a <a href = "http://www.ammoland.com/2015/06/gabby-giffords-a-gun-criminal/>gun criminal</A>.
CI, what do you make of this?
If it is true, it puts the lie to those who seek more background checks to keep the guns out of the hands of those specifically banned from having them under the law... if you have someone famous like this (no background check necessary) and no one goes after her.
My point was...she's a flea. She wouldn't be worth the hate.
DeleteRegarding the article, I'm not in favor of prohibiting wounded/disabled citizens from owning a firearm, based simply on a disability. My reading of 'mentally defective' seems to be different than the author. Additionally, if Giffords could be adjudicated as such [and she hasn't been], then the door is wide open to deny 2nd Amendment rights to veterans with PTSD.
I have little doubt that there are some who salivate at the thought of that.
I though as much.
DeleteJMJ
You thought as much what? That you didn't see the rhetoric you were hoping for, so you invented a fantasy that you can neither prove nor defend?
DeleteIt appears that you didn't think at all.
That's funny... Jersey accusing a combat vet of not having a spine.
DeleteYeah, CI's been shot at and blow up in Iraq, but he's afraid to say he doesn't like someone.
Liberalism is a mental disorder
When did you serve, Jersey?
DeleteWhat next?
ReplyDeleteThe Army brands it's latest Armored Personnel Carrier a "People's Carrier" and names it the Che Guevara.
How about the USS Pol Pot?
I have nothing against Giffords either, but we have not yet exhausted the canon of American heroes to name our ships after.
If rightwing armchair generals don't waste and dissipate our armed forces, the leftwing progressives will end up reducing them to the level of a PC European jobs program.
Yep...it's all just another political game. I like 'People's Carrier' though!
DeleteIs moderation off?
ReplyDeleteIt's pandering.
ReplyDeleteAppeal to the heartstrings.
Yep.
DeleteLooking forward to the launch of the aircraft carrier USS James Traficant and the two Zumwalt-class destroyers named after Rod Blagojevic and Charlie Rangel.
DeleteMy favorite part of this is that right after her husband gave a speech against guns he went out and bought an AR 15 for himself. Not sure what the gun cost but the hypocrisy is priceless.
ReplyDeleteIrony is sweet.....much like well-heeled gun controllers having armed security.
DeletePerhals, given the Giffords' extreme views, this vessel should be completely unarmed.
DeleteFunny you should mention that [satire alert]:
Deletehttp://www.duffelblog.com/2015/06/uss-gabrielle-giffords-christened-gun-free/
Lol.
DeleteAnyway, someone wanting to destroy the 2nd Amendment because they got shot is on a level with wanting to destroy the First Amendment because they got insulted.
An infantile, selfish reaction.
How utterly moronic is saying getting insulted is analogous to being shot in the head? Unbelievable stupidity that is really astounding to behold.
DeleteDervish, if all you're going to do is troll through and make unfounded accusations of "hate"......with juvenile name calling.....I will delete every post you make. Offer something cogent and mature, or go back to your own playpen, where you craft rants and fantasy about other bloggers.
ReplyDeleteNeither getting shot in the head nor getting insulted should ever be an excuse to lash out at law abiding citizens and their basic rights.
ReplyDeleteIf we were discussing a situation where this happened I would agree with you. But we aren't and I don't.
DeleteIt has happened, for sure, with Giffords.
ReplyDeleteSo you believe. I say it hasn't.
DeleteI tend to look at actual situations as they happen, thank you, instead of claims that they didn't.
