In the mid-70s, post-Viet Nam, with the VOLAR, "Let the Army join you", beer machines in the barracks, go-go girls in the NCO club style of Army, the Marines brought out the "We don't promise you a rose garden" recruiting campaign.
I enlisted at the end of that era....the beer machines had gone, but go-go dancers still remained at the base clubs in Korea; though houseboys, DMZ rotations and six day weeks were also a thing of the past, by the time I got there.
I heard nothing but stories of how good things used to be.....except for the rampant drug use....

Men joined in droves. The most successful recruiting campaign in history outside of Pearl Harbor or 9/11.
